History and Governance

In July of 1905, members of the African American community recognized the need for education beyond the primary level, led by a very visionary professor, John J. Wright.  A strong and united coalition of African American churches was organized and named the Spotsylvania Sunday School Union (SSSU).  This group of lay and religious leaders are still active today and the Union exists as a 501 (c) (3) organization through the work of member churches, individual memberships, donations, gifts, grants, and rental fees from the John J. Wright Park facility.

Membership

The Union is currently comprised of twelve Baptist churches to include:  Bethlehem, Beulah, Branch Fork, First New Hope, Little Mine Road, Mount Hope, Mount Olive, Mount Zion, Piney Branch, Second New Hope, Sylvannah, and Zion Hill. Individuals may support the work of the Union by purchasing annual or life memberships.
